Questions?
It is natural to have questions as you start your financial journey. We've complied a list of the most common questions we receive. If your question isn't answered below, please reach out to us.

How can a FEC counselor help me?
Our counselors work with you to understand your financial situation and financial goals. The more you tell us, the better! We can help clients manage their money better through budgeting, establish and improve their credit score, pay down debt, increase savings, and suggest affordable banking options. We can also create plans to tackle student loan debt, buy a home, or break the paycheck to paycheck cycle.
How long are counseling sessions?
The first session is typically the longest, and we ask that you reserve 60 minutes so that your counselor has time to fully understand your financial situation.
What should I expect during the first session?
During the first session, we spend time getting to know you, your financial situation, and your financial goals. We go through a financial health assessment, fill out an initial financial snapshot, and if you desire and we have time, pull your credit report. You will leave the session with an action plan with best next steps to attain your financial goals.
What should I bring to the first session?
We don't require you to bring anything during the first session, but if you have a specific question regarding a bill, collection letter, paystub, or bank statement, feel free to bring it with you.
How many times can I meet with a counselor?
You can meet with your counselor as many times as needed. There is typically a one-month period between sessions, but it is flexible based upon your needs.
What happens if I am late or miss an appointment?
If you will be more than 15 minutes late for an appointment, you will need to schedule another appointment by either visiting our website or contacting your counselor. Please give us as much advance notice as possible if you need to cancel so that we can schedule another client during your time. We are often booked. Our schedules are often quite full, and we want to be able to see everyone in a timely manner.
Can you help me with my taxes?
No, but we can refer you to United Way's VITA program, which may be able to complete your taxes for free.
Do you offer financial assistance to help pay bills?
No, but we can refer you to agencies that may be able to assist you.
What languages do you offer?
We offer our services in English and Spanish.
Where can I have an in-person session?
We offer in-person sessions at the Human Relations Commission, Taylors and Simpsonville libraries, SC Works, and Greenville Tech (main campus).
Can I have my counseling session while driving or at the store?
We understand that you are busy, but we ask that you find a place that is distraction free, quiet, safe and confidential to have your appointment. We want to guarantee that we have your full attention as we talk about your finances!
Will you share my information with anyone?
We share aggregate demographic information with our grant funders, but nothing connected to your name or address. All information you share with us is confidential, and we only share that information with your permission.
