The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is a financial “watchdog” site that the Greenville FEC uses to help clients with getting resolutions to disputes with financial entities, creditors and credit bureaus. It was established after the 2008 housing/financial crisis to protect consumers from unfair practices. On 2/8/25, the CFPB was ordered to stop all work, and the FEC has lost an important advocate for our clients. Some of the many things the CFPB has accomplished:
--Worked to have most medical debt removed from credit reports, which disproportionately impacted low income communities of color
--Started initiatives to reduce junk fees in mortgages, loans, credit cards and banking institutions
-- Returned billions of dollars to consumers through refunds and canceled debts.
If you feel that the CFPB should be reinstated, we suggest that you reach out to your government representatives to encourage them to support the mission of the CFPB.
